Geiranger weather forecast
The forecast for the next few days is at the top of this page. It applies to the village of Geiranger at the head of the fjord. On the summit of Dalsnibba it is much colder than in the village, and the weather up there can be very different from the weather down by the water.
The cameras under Webcams show what it looks like right now at the harbour, in Hellesylt, on Dalsnibba and on the mountain roads.
Best time to visit
The best time depends on what you plan to do in Geiranger. The mountain roads are only open for part of the year, while the village and the fjord can be reached all year.
- Viewpoints and mountain roads: The road up Dalsnibba, the road over Langvatnet to Geiranger and Trollstigen are closed in winter. For the viewpoints on these roads, visit in the summer season.
- Waterfalls: Hellesyltfossen in Hellesylt is at its most impressive during the snowmelt in early summer. In winter the waterfalls in Geiranger can freeze, as can the river along the Fosseråsa hiking trail.
- Fjord and boats: You can get out on the fjord in winter too, when a fjord cruise runs from Ålesund to Geiranger. Boat trips are listed under Tours.
- Places nearby: Some are only open in the summer season, others all year. Details are under Day trips.
How to get to Geiranger is covered under Getting there.
Spring, summer and autumn
In spring, after the winter closure, the road up Dalsnibba, the road over Langvatnet and Trollstigen reopen. The date varies from year to year. After that, all the roadside viewpoints can be reached. In season Dalsnibba is accessible around the clock; only early and late in the season is it closed at night.
In the summer season many places nearby are open too:
- Hellesylt: Hellesyltfossen in the middle of the village carries a lot of water during the snowmelt in early summer.
- Valldal: The rafting season starts in mid-May, and in summer the farms in the strawberry village sell their produce.
- Briksdalsbreen: The Troll Cars to the glacier usually run from May to October.
Winter
In winter the road up Dalsnibba, the road over Langvatnet to Geiranger and Trollstigen are closed. Geiranger can still be reached, though: Ørnevegen between Eidsdal and Geiranger is open all year. How to get there in winter is covered under Getting there.
In winter a fjord cruise runs from Ålesund through the Storfjord and the Sunnylvsfjord into the Geirangerfjord. If there is ice, the boat only goes as far as Eidsdal and a bus continues via Ørnesvingen to Geiranger. In the village the river along the Waterfall Walk can freeze.
Some places in the area are open in winter too:
- Aksla in Ålesund: The viewpoint above the town is accessible all year.
- Romsdalsgondolen in Åndalsnes: The gondola runs to Nesaksla all year.
- Loen Skylift: In winter the cable car only runs during set periods and is closed for maintenance in early December.
Mountain roads in snow and bad weather
Even after reopening, the mountain roads can be closed at times at night and in bad weather. The road up Dalsnibba is closed at short notice when there is a risk of snow or ice.
The page for the tourist route between Geiranger and Trollstigen on Nasjonale turistveger (National Tourist Routes) shows whether a road is currently open. The road cameras at Korsmyra between Geiranger and Eidsdal and at Trollstigen show the road surface; both are under Webcams.
