Boat trips, kayaking and tours on the Geirangerfjord
From the village of Geiranger, fjord cruises, RIB boats and kayaks head for the Seven Sisters and the other waterfalls on the fjord. Panoramic buses take you up to the viewpoints, and an e-bike tour climbs all the way to Dalsnibba. Boats also link Geiranger with Hellesylt and Ålesund, and in winter a dedicated day trip runs from Ålesund.

By boat
Fjord cruises start in the village. The meeting point is behind the tourist information at the express boat quay, 15 minutes before departure. The fjord cruise takes 75 minutes, the quiet cruise on the new catamaran 2 hours. Both pass the Seven Sisters, the Suitor and the Bridal Veil; more on the waterfalls under Seven Sisters. A free audio guide in 12 languages is available for the fjord cruise via an app.
- Getting off on the way: On the shorter cruise you can get off at Skagehola, hike up to the Skageflå farm and be picked up again later.
- With a wheelchair: Choose the quiet cruise, as only the 2-hour trip is wheelchair accessible.
- Booking: From June to August some departures sell out, so it is worth booking early.
Some cruises stop at the Suitor, and on board you can then taste water from the waterfall. These boats take one hour from Geiranger, 2.5 hours with a stop in Hellesylt, or 4 hours from Hellesylt.
An express boat runs from Geiranger to Hellesylt in about 45 minutes. In summer there is also a car ferry between Hellesylt and Geiranger; the crossing takes about an hour. Since 1 January 2026, passenger ships under 10,000 gross tonnage must be zero-emission in the World Heritage fjords. Timetables and arriving by water are covered under Getting there.
From Ålesund and in winter
A quiet fjord cruise runs from Ålesund to Geiranger. It starts at Skutvika in Ålesund and takes 3 to 3.5 hours one way, or 9 hours as a return day trip. How to get to Ålesund is covered under Getting there.
From November to May there is a winter trip from Ålesund, also lasting 9 hours. In Geiranger a bus takes you up to Flydalsjuvet, and the trip includes a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre. If there is ice on the fjord, the boat only goes as far as Eidsdal, and a bus continues via Ørnesvingen to Geiranger.
By RIB
A RIB is an open, rigid-hulled inflatable boat with a powerful engine. The RIB trip from Geiranger takes about 50 minutes and heads for the Seven Sisters, past the fjord farms of Blomberg, Knivsflå and Skageflå, the Bridal Veil and the Suitor. You can join from age 3, and children up to 14 only with an adult. A flotation suit and goggles are provided.
The season runs from March to December, and in summer the boat leaves on the hour between 09:00 and 19:00.
Kayaking
The kayak centre is at Homlong, about 2 km from the village. You rent kayaks on site; they cannot be booked online and are handed out subject to availability. Rental runs from late May to late September, and you can paddle from age 8.
Guided tours last 2.5 hours (from age 10) or 4 hours (from age 13). The longer tour goes as far as the Seven Sisters and the Suitor.
Bus tours and e-bike
Panoramic bus tours take 1.5 or 2 hours and stop at two to three viewpoints above the fjord. The platforms are described under Viewpoints, and the view from the mountain under Dalsnibba.
Hop-on hop-off buses run in Geiranger only on busy cruise ship days, between mid-April and late October. They stop at the cruise terminal, the Norwegian Fjord Centre, Vesterås farm and Flydalsjuvet.
An e-bike tour climbs from Geiranger to Dalsnibba, about 42 km there and back. The tour runs from June to October, and e-bikes are available from age 14.
